Time out for a Chesterfield!
TCU vs. Baylor, 1960
TCU 14, Baylor 6. Great Wexler cover with jumping quarterback, featuring Baylor’s Ronny Bull and TCU’s Bob Lilly.
TCU vs. Texas A&M, 1957
Texas A&M 7, TCU 0. The player is running with the pack of Oasis Cigarettes. Brilliant.
Ohio State vs. Indiana, 1949
The Buckeyes beat the Hoosiers 46-7 in Columbus on Oct. 1, 1949.
Duke vs. SMU, 1956
The Blue Devils beat the Mustangs 14-6 in Durham on Oct. 13, 1956. The program has another great Murray Olderman comic, this one of Duke receiver Buddy Bass. And the obligatory Lucky Strikes ad isn’t just of a dude with a helmet or of a cheerleader’s megaphone turned into a nicotine cornucopia, but actually has…
Cal vs. Stanford, 1946
Kinda love the cover. Such a fun-loving looking bear. They look like they’d be friends. This was the first Big Game since 1942. Chesterfield took the opportunity to teach fans the ABC’s of cigarettes. The Indians took the opportunity to teach their Bear friends about football, 25-6. You can find some more inside page scans…
Illinois vs. Stanford, 1952 Rose Bowl
The Fighting Illini crushed Stanford on New Year’s Day 1952. Keep scrolling for a classic College Kids Love Chesterfields cigarette centerfold and some great videos of the game (the second has Illinois players reminiscing about the victory). You can read the AP writeup, and see some photos from the game, here.
Auburn vs. Florida, 1955
The Tigers blanked the Gators 13-0 at home in Cliff Hare Stadium on Oct. 1., 1955—a victory Auburn fans apparently deem worthy of framing. Great cover, nice Chesterfield Cigarettes centerfold (those suckers were made with AccuRay).
Notre Dame vs. Army, 1970
October 10, 1970. The Irish plowed through Army 51-10 in Notre Dame Stadium. Awesome cover.
Navy vs. Notre Dame, 1954
The cover features a sailor serenading a leprechaun with a sea shanty or something, which the leprechaun looks like he’s enjoying… appropriately as it’d turn out: The Irish shutout Navy 6-0 at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. There’s a Naval Aviators ad on the back cover and a Lucky Strike roster centerfold, our first on the…
